Film Scratching Workshop

Today was cool, we got to use blank 16mm film and draw, scratch and splice together the film. This was then projected onto a wall using an analog projector.

Tom and I realised that we have to use old techniques and bring them into the new, rather than simply use new technologies for the entire project.

This is good because now we have to think of new ways of experimenting and blending old and new techniques. Tonight (9th February) I am making a short 1 minute animation by creating 24 frames for every one second by using adobe illustrator or photoshop and creating and exporting the sequence. In all I should have to make approximately 1440 frames for one minute of footage (24 x 60 = 1440).

Tomorrow we will meet up and bring the sequence into after effects where we will experiment by projecting the animation onto cubes.

I feel like the projection could have some symbolic meaning. Perhaps we could do what Len Lye did and make some experimental films for companies. we could contact some small companies or enter competitions. I also had the idea of projecting onto the sculptures in the outdoor art exhibition in Elstead.
