Making light work of Light Work
3.2.15
In todays workshop we looked at pretty much all aspects of lighting. These aspects ranged from drawing out diagrams for 3 point light setups, learning the standardised health and safety procedure for the safe operation of lights to identifying the temperatures of each type of light.
At 9:30 we met in the stores to collect equipment, and spent the next 40-45 minutes checking it whilst also discussing our favourite Directors of Photography. Next of all we split into two groups, each group with a DoP, a Gaffer and Light operators. Within these groups we were taught the standardised operating procedures for the handling of lighting equipment an the proper way of identifying and dealing with hazards.
Throughout the course of the day we were given a number of exercises that challenged us to work as a unit, emulating how a DoP would work with his/her team. One challenge for the DoP was having to coordinate her team to get the most suitable lighting for the frame. With the help of the Gaffer and the rest of the light operators we were able to experiment with different intensities of light and also use reflectors and diffusion to make the subject look appear more modelled.

The time we spent working on the lights were really useful. Taking practical lighting workshops is probably one of my favourite parts of this course, not because we get awesome profile pictures out of it, but also because Cinematography and lighting is an area I have always been fascinated by.
Anyway, here are a few more shots from the workshop. We have another tomorrow, so expect more pictures and cool gifs.
